Labiaplasty

Enlarged labia minora (labia minora hypertrophy) is a condition that some women have. During puberty, the size of the labia minora (“inner lips”) may increase. Depending upon the woman, the labial size may become significantly enlarged and thickened. Symptomatic women may complain of genital discomfort with certain physical activities such as biking, running, horseback riding, and intercourse, where the labia can become “pinched,” and that can be painful. Others are more self-conscious of the appearance of the genital region while wearing tight clothing and/or swimsuits – with the labia minora bulging/protruding in the crotch. Women with labia minora hypertrophy may also experience recurrent or chronic yeast infections or skin irritations. Some women may have asymmetric labial hypertrophy, where one side is significantly larger than the other. Dr. Bernstein is specially trained in techniques to effectively surgically reduce the size of the labia minora, tailored to each particular woman’s desires.

Frequently Asked Questions

The procedure time ranges from 1-3 hours on average, depending on the complexity of the needed/desired anatomical changes.

The procedure can be done under anesthesia in an outpatient surgery center for a complete pain-free experience. Some women opt for an in-office surgery with regional anesthesia (pudendal block), eliminating the need for general anesthesia while maintaining a significant level of comfort.

During the first 2-3 days, there is swelling in the genital region where surgery was performed. Most women can return to work within 3-5 days. It takes approximately 6 weeks for the stitches to dissolve, so during that time it is important to avoid wearing clothing that may irritate the area (thongs, tight jeans, etc) and also abstain from activities that may disrupt the sutures (cycling, horseback riding, etc).

Of course! The techniques employed by Dr.Bernstein ensure that the clitoris is not injured during the surgery.
